A story of passion and betrayal in belle Époque Paris between Amelie Gautreau (Madame X) and Dr. Samuel Pozzi were immortalized on canvas by John Singer Sargent. Dr. Pozzi was a famous doctor and yet even more famous as the most handsome man in Paris and an incredible lover. Amelie, from a wealthy American family, was considered the most beautiful woman in Paris and her every move was chronicled by the tabloids. Their affair became the envy of many and the talk of Paris. Catching the interest of Sargent, his portrait of Amelie alluded to their affair. When Madame X was unveiled at the Paris Salon of 1884 the fallen strap of Amelie's low cut dress and her pale skin tone prompted an instant scandal. Amelie was ruined and Sargent later repainted the fallen strap and fled to London.
The ballet of Madame X was first performed in 1999 in New York City and later revived in 2004 for the 15th Anniversary of Dances Patrelle. The 2004 cast included SANDRA BROWN (Soloist, American Ballet Theater) as Madame X and MARCELO GOMES (Principal, American Ballet Theater) as Dr. Pozzi.
