DANCING QUEEN: Elizabeth Jean Zengara dances the role of Madame X, who is portrayed in John Singer Sargent's famous painting (right). |
Little did John Singer Sargent know when he painted "Madame X" in 1884 that this work would inspire Choreographer Francis Patrelle to stage a ballet based on the portrait. The dance, set in Paris toward the end of the 18th century, features Elizabeth Jean Zengara in the role of Madame Pierre Gautreau (Madame X). "Madame X," the painting, was first shown in the salon of 1884, and the uproar was immediate: Sargent presented his subject in a dress that showed considerable cleavage. Madame Gautreau's family demanded that the painting be withdrawn; instead, Sargent took it down before the salon ended. thus saving it from certain destruction.
