What’s Out There! Images from Here to the Edge of the Universe was released in North America on November 9, 2005 and with its second printing on July 26, 2006. Currently published in nine languages by Duncan Baird Ltd (London), WOT is a full-color picture book that celebrates the awe and wonder of seminal astronomical phenomena while explaining their scientific context in an A-Z editorial format.
As co-author of WOT, my experience of researching and editing some 212 images from more than 15,000 was a three year "arm-chair" journey through the known universe! With personal assistance from astronomers at the Vatican Observatory, I was also able to secure Stephen Hawking to write the book's forward.
To service the photographic, spacecraft, telescope and scientific editorial objectives of WOT, I consulted with and had assistance from nearly ninety world-wide astronomers, scientists, astronauts and space professionals. These individuals hailed from diverse institutional resources like the European Space Agency, European Southern Observatory, Max Planck Institute for Physics, Swedish Academy of Sciences, John Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, Lockheed Martin Solar Physics Laboratory, National Optical Astronomy Observatory, Canada France Hawaii Telescope, NASA HQ and its space centers at Goddard, Kennedy, Johnson and JPL and a host of remarkable “amateur” astro-photographers to mention a few.

Michael made a presentation — From Here to the Edge - A Visual Tour of the Universe — to a sell-out crowd at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C., December 4, 2005 with colleague Ray Villard, News Manager for the Hubble Space Institute and WOT’s technical advisor. The Washington Post ran both a picture from WOT and a short blurb about the event:
In December 2005, SPACE.Com featured an online interview with Michael with links to both images from What's Out There and to Amazon.com.
Michael presented Discovering the Art of Space Exploration at the National Science Foundation in Arlington, VA. on March 16.
The April issue of Photo District News published Tackling the Final Frontier, One Image at a Time on Michael’s photography and co-authoring / picture editing WOT.
