Ballet

NACHT OHNE MORGEN - (2021)  50 min.
The third ballet by the collaborative team of Xenia Wiest (choreographer), Patrick Soluri (music), and Melanie Jane Frost (costumes). This work also featuring music by Philip Glass and Camille Saint-Saens, premiered September 25, 2021 by Ballett X Schwerin in Germany as part of their gala season opener, and was also Xenia’s debut as the new Ballet Director! The piece received rave reviews and 13 performances in the 2021/22 season, plus 4 more performances in the 2022/23 season.

SEPARATION - (2020) 11 min.
Longtime collaborator and choreographer, Francis Patrelle, teamed up with noted New York City Ballet principal dancers, Ask la Cour and Abi Stafford, to co-choreograph a new short work to be featured on Dances Patrelle’s online season. This ballet was created on zoom throughout the pandemic, and finished in person a few days before filming in NYC. The music for this haunting work, is Patrick’s sixth collaboration with Patrelle, and second with Abi & Ask, who danced lead roles in the 2019 production of MADAME X. This work was part of the Dances Patrelle online season, and premiered on Youtube on May 20, 2021. The video is available on Youtube < click here to watch >

Just Before Now - (2017) 20 minutes
The newest ballet by the collaborative team of Xenia Wiest (choreographer), Patrick Soluri (music), and Melanie Jane Frost (costumes), premiered March 30, 2017 by Ballet de l’Opéra National de Bordeaux. It received 7 sold-out performances this season at the historical Grand Theatre de Bordeaux (1780). The work was commissioned as the Grande Prixe / 1st place prize of the Concours de jeunes chorégraphes de Biarritzin April 2016 with their previous work TO BE CONTINUED (see below).

Sisyphus - (2014) 18 minutes
A ballet score for solo cello and orchestra commissioned by Intermezzo Dance Company, and based on the "Myth of Sisyphus" by Camus. Choreography by the companies Artstic Director, Craig Salstein, who is also a soloist at American Ballet Theater. The work performed at Vassar College on March 29th and 30th, 2014 as a work in progress and will perform again January 17th and 18th, 2015 at Miller Theater in NYC. Both casts included Abi Stafford, principal ballerina at New York City Ballet.

Fire and Air - (2013) 14 minutes
A dance score for string trio and orchestra commissioned and performed by Bowen McCauley Dance, and based on the last scene from "Antony & Cleopatra" by Shakespeare. Choreography by Lucy McCauley, with additional collaboration by Alan Paul - associate director of the Shakespeare Theatre Company in Washington, D.C. Mr. Soluri conducted the sold out world premieres on April 5th and 6th, 2013 at The Kennedy Center. The work was performed again at the 2013 Capital Fringe Festival in July 2013, and at the GuongDong Festival in China in November 2013.

Continuum / To Be Continued - (2009) 16 minutes
A short ballet score commissioned by the Staatsballett Berlin, one of Europe's leading ballet companies, and the first work for the collaborative team of Xenia Wiest (choreographer), Patrick Soluri (music), and Melanie Jane Frost (costumes). It won the Grande Prixe / 1st place prize of the Concours de jeunes chorégraphes de Biarritzin in France in April 2016, and the music is a finalist in the Kaleidescope 2020 international composers competition. This ballet was featured in the Staatsballett's program "Shut Up and Dance: Reloaded!" which premiered January 15, 2010 followed by 18 additional performances over two seasons in Berlin, Germany at the Komische Oper Berlin. Its most recent production was by Ballet X Schwerin in Germany with 9 performances.  Scored for orchestra: 2 fl, 2 ob (dbl E Hn), 2 Bb Cl (dbl B Cl), 2 bn (dbl Cbsn), 4 hn, 2 trpt, 2 tbn, bs tbn, timp, 4 perc, celeste, hrp, strings.

Fancy Nancy - (2009) 32 minutes
A children's ballet commissioned by the Cuyahoga Valley Youth Ballet in Ohio based on the "Fancy Nancy" children books by Jane O'connor. The ballet is choreographed by Francis Patrelle and premieres in Akron, Ohio March 13th and 14th, 2010 and will have additional performances on May 8th, 2010 in New York City at Symphony Space. Story was adapted from Fancy Nancy © 2005 by Jane O'Connor and illustrated by Robin Preiss Glasser. Used by permission of Harper-Collins Publishers.

MURDER AT THE MASQUE: Casebook of Edgar Allan Poe - (2009) 47 minutes
Commissioned & performed by Dances Patrelle in celebration of their 20th Anniversary Season. Choreographed by Francis Patrelle and story by Justin Allen based on stories and writtings of Edgar Allen Poe on his 200th Anniversary. World Premiere April 16-19, 2009 in NYC at the Kaye Playhouse. Commissioned and performed by Dances and choreographed by Francis Patrelle. Patrelle March 23 - 25, 2007 in NYC. Cast featured Jenifer Ringer and Stephen Hanna, principals from New York City Ballet. Madame X - (1999/2004) 24 minutes
Based on the famous painting by John Singer Sargent. Commissioned and performed by Dances Patrelle and choreographed by Francis Patrelle. Performed April 8 - 11, 1999 in NYC and April 22-24, 2004 in NYC and April 16-18, 2004 at Kaatsbaan. 2004 performances for the Dances Patrelle 15th Anniversary Season with a cast featuring Sandra Brown (as Madame X) and Marcelo Gomes (as Dr. Pozzi) from American Ballet Theater. Recorded by the Manhattan Chamber Sinfonia and Manhattan Chamber Orchestra. Opera

Figaro & The Zombie Apocalypse - (2013) 10 minutes
The latest in Soluri's series of wildly popular satirical "Figaro" 10 minute operas. This dark, operatic comedy was commissioned by The Fort Worth Opera (Darren Woods, General Director) and is written for 4 voices, and piano. There is an alternate orchestration for string quartet and piano. World premiere October 12, 2013 in Fort Worh, Texas. Scored for piano, Sop, Mz, T, and Barr Also available for String Quartet and Piano.

Polka (2012) 6 minutes
Who knew that the polka could be so dangerous? At a wedding reception in 1993 Jojo and her girlfriends are about to find out. A comic chamber opera for female cast, with a libretto by Royce Vavrek. World premiere at Weill-Carnegie Hall on October 19, 2012 by the Remarkable Theater Brigade. Scored for String Quartet and piano with 3x Sop and 2x MezAlso available for solo piano, or piano and solo strings.

Embedded (2010/2011) 45 minutes
A one-act chamber opera commissioned by the American Lyric Theater with a libretto by Deborah Brevoort. It is part of "The Poe Project," a trio of one-act operas that asks 'What might Edgar Allan Poe, the master of horror, write if he were alive today?' Scored for 18 instrument chamber orchestra and 6 six singers and also available for piano-only. First public showcase on November 1, 2010 at Symphony Space (piano/vocal version). A public showcase of the full score with orcehstra and cast on November 10, 2011 at The DiMenna Center for Classical Music in New York City. Winner of the Frontier's competition by Fort Worth Opera with a workshop on May 9, 2013.

The Tragedy of Count Alfredo von Nibelungen
An Epic Cycle of Four Operas in Five Minutes (2011) 5 minutes
Four short comic operas based on works by the great opera composers. Libretto co-written by Patrick Soluri and Natalia Boesch. World premiere at Weill-Carnegie Hall on November 10, 2011 by the Remarkable Theater Brigade. The four operas are:

2) La Trattoria(Verdi)
3) Die Zauberhünchen (Mozart) trans. "The Magic Chicken"
4) Alfredo & Schnitzolde (Wagner)

The Tell Tale Cellphone (2010) 12 minutes
A farce based on the stories and writtings of Edgar Allen Poe, with a libretto co-written by Patrick Soluri and Natalia Boesch. Adam & Eve (2008) 23 minutes
Two patients in a mental hospital are convinced they are Adam and Eve; they obsess over an apple and think their doctor is Satan. Written in collaboration with librettist Quincy Long while resident artists in the American Lyric Theater’s Composer Librettist Development Program and mentored by Mark Adamo. Workshop performance January 7, 2008 at the Leonard Nimoy Thalia Symphony Space.

The Inferno of Dante: Canto V (2002) 18 minutes
One act setting of the Fifth Canto from Dante’s masterpiece with English translation by John Ciardi (used with permission). Performed with orchestra and cast May 7, 2003 by New York City Opera during the VOX 2003: Showcasing American Composers. Scored for orchestra, two lead male roles, speaker and seven soloists; optional SATB chorus: T, Bar, Speaker, (soloists) 2Sop, 2Mz, T, Bar, B, [SATB chorus]. Music for Film & TV
A Lesson in Biology (2007) 
Film score for the independent feature film. Music featured string orchestra and sax. In addition produced period rock cues from the late 1960’s. Currently in the film festival circuit, has been accepted into 15+ festivals to date and won several awards.

Dead Serious (2005) 
On July 22nd, Mr. Soluri finished scoring the independent feature film "Dead Serious." Part of the film takes place in a dance club, so in addition to more traditional dramatic orchestral underscore, he also composed numerous dance club tracks as well as several driving hard rock/electronic tracks for action sequences. In addition to scoring the film Mr. Soluri also did the sound design and sound effects. The film has already been accepted at several film festivals around the country and a complete list will be posted when available.
